Causes and Treatments for Toenail Infections

Onychomycosis, also known more commonly as a toenail fungus, is an infection that causes the toenails to become discolored, yellow, thick, and brittle. There are a variety of fungi that cause toenail fungus, and they tend to thrive in dark, warm, and moist environments like sweaty shoes, showers, pools and locker rooms. Poor foot hygiene, wearing nail polish, having a chronic disease such as diabetes, and frequently using community showers or pools are all contributing factors to developing toenail fungus. Because of this, wearing footwear in these areas, along with not sharing shoes or socks, is key to preventing toenail fungus from spreading. Fungal nail infections rarely heal on their own, which means that patients who have an infected nail may wish to consult with a podiatrist. A podiatrist may choose to remove part of the infected nail, prescribe a topical antifungal medication, or prescribe an oral antifungal medication.

If left untreated, toenail fungus may spread to other toenails, skin, or even fingernails. If you suspect you have toenail fungus it is important to seek treatment right away. For more information about treatment, contact one of our podiatrists of ABC Podiatry. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Symptoms

  • Warped or oddly shaped nails
  • Yellowish nails
  • Loose/separated nail
  • Buildup of bits and pieces of nail fragments under the nail
  • Brittle, broken, thickened nail

Treatment

If self-care strategies and over-the-counter medications does not help your fungus, your podiatrist may give you a prescription drug instead. Even if you find relief from your toenail fungus symptoms, you may experience a repeat infection in the future.

Prevention

In order to prevent getting toenail fungus in the future, you should always make sure to wash your feet with soap and water. After washing, it is important to dry your feet thoroughly especially in between the toes. When trimming your toenails, be sure to trim straight across instead of in a rounded shape. It is crucial not to cover up discolored nails with nail polish because that will prevent your nail from being able to “breathe”.

In some cases, surgical procedure may be needed to remove the toenail fungus. Consult with your podiatrist about the best treatment options for your case of toenail fungus.

The 1s, 2s, and 3s of Ankle Sprain Severity

When one or more ligaments in the ankle are overstretched or torn, an ankle sprain occurs. Ankle sprains can range from mild to severe. Podiatrists use a system of grading, or classification, to describe the severity of the sprain. A Grade 1 sprain is mild and characterized by mild pain, swelling, joint instability and stiffness, and difficulty jogging or jumping. A Grade 2 sprain is moderate and involves moderate pain, significant swelling, bruising, some loss of motion in the ankle, and trouble walking. A Grade 3 sprain, the most severe, is associated with severe pain, swelling, instability, loss of motion, and extreme difficulty walking. If you suspect that you may have sprained your ankle, please seek the care of a podiatrist.

Ankle sprains are common but need immediate attention. If you need your feet checked, contact one of our podiatrists from ABC Podiatry. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankle sprains take place when the ligaments in your ankle are torn or stretched beyond their limits. There are multiple ways that the ankle can become injured, including twisting or rolling over onto your ankle, putting undue stress on it, or causing trauma to the ankle itself.

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Mild to moderate bruising
  • Limited mobility
  • Swelling
  • Discoloration of the skin (depending on severity)

Preventing a Sprain

  • Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your limits

Treatment of a Sprain

Treatment of a sprain depends on the severity.  Many times, people are told to rest and remain off their feet completely, while others are given an air cast. If the sprain is very severe, surgery may be required.

If you have suffered an ankle sprain previously, you may want to consider additional support such as a brace and regular exercises to strengthen the ankle.

Treating Pain in the Plantar Fascia

Pain in the connective tissue that connects the heel to the ball of the foot (plantar fascia) is known as plantar fasciitis. This common condition occurs when the plantar fascia becomes damaged, strained or even torn. Factors that contribute to this condition include overuse of the plantar fascia, wearing high heels, being obese, standing for prolonged periods of time, having tight calf muscles, flat feet or high arches. The pain that you feel from plantar fasciitis is worse in the morning and subsides after your body has warmed up—only to return later in the day. If you believe you have plantar fasciitis, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist. Foot and ankle specialists deal with plantar fasciitis all the time and have various forms of treatment, such as rest and ice, anti-inflammatory medications, custom orthotics, physical therapy, night splints, shockwave therapy, casting, injections, and in severe cases, surgery.

Plantar fasciitis is a common foot condition that is often caused by a strain injury. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, contact one of our podiatrists from ABC Podiatry. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. The plantar fascia is a ligament that connects your heel to the front of your foot. When this ligament becomes inflamed, plantar fasciitis is the result. If you have plantar fasciitis you will have a stabbing pain that usually occurs with your first steps in the morning. As the day progresses and you walk around more, this pain will start to disappear, but it will return after long periods of standing or sitting.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Having high arches in your feet
  • Other foot issues such as flat feet
  • Pregnancy (due to the sudden weight gain)
  • Being on your feet very often

There are some risk factors that may make you more likely to develop plantar fasciitis compared to others. The condition most commonly affects adults between the ages of 40 and 60. It also tends to affect people who are obese because the extra pounds result in extra stress being placed on the plantar fascia.

Prevention

  • Take good care of your feet – Wear shoes that have good arch support and heel cushioning.
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • If you are a runner, alternate running with other sports that won’t cause heel pain

There are a variety of treatment options available for plantar fasciitis along with the pain that accompanies it. Additionally, physical therapy is a very important component in the treatment process. It is important that you meet with your podiatrist to determine which treatment option is best for you.

What Does Diet Have to Do With Gout?

If you have ever suffered from a gout attack, a sudden and extremely painful inflammation of one or more joints in your foot, you may be surprised to find that one of the ways to manage symptoms and prevent future attacks is to modify your diet. Gout is caused by a buildup of a substance called uric acid in the bloodstream. This substance can crystallize and become lodged in a joint, leading to intense pain, swelling, and inflammation. Left untreated, repeated gout attacks can permanently damage the affected joints, causing chronic pain and restricting their range of motion. Purines are chemical compounds naturally found in certain foods. In the body, purines get converted to uric acid. When there are too many purines, they can create excess uric acid that builds up in the body, increasing your risk of having a gout attack. By avoiding foods and drinks with large amounts of purine, you may be able to lower your risk of gout. Foods to avoid include red and organ meats, certain types of seafood, highly processed or sugary foods, and yeast. You should also avoid drinking sugary or alcoholic beverages. For more information about the relationship between your diet and your foot health, please consult with a podiatrist.

Gout is a foot condition that requires certain treatment and care. If you are seeking treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from ABC Podiatry. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.
